Merton: The Chatroulette YouTube sensation!
March 26th, 2010Ok so I’m still working on making the website work…however upon coming across this I HAD to get the word out! So, who or what is a Merton? Why is she/he/it a YouTube sensation? and what the hell is a Chatroulette? To answer those in no particular order:
ChatRoulette is the newest trend in online interaction…its basically chat with video really, the twist is – you ‘play a game’ where the website randomly finds and connects you to someone you can videochat with. Now, usually its filled with the creepiest bunch of boofheads to have eluded the local authorities, the most frequent type you come across are the shirtless males hoping you’re female (Lord help you if you are!) and then it just gets worse from there.
Bad deal right? Well that’s where our man Merton comes in (yes it’s a he). A frequent (I think) user, Merton waits for someone to get connected and then almost immediately, he’ll start playing his piano and improvise something to sing about (usually about the person he’s videochatting with) and it is HILARIOUS.
Not foreign to the hilarity he was causing, Merton went and recorded as many sessions with random strangers as he could (about 6 hours worth) and then with his friends he went on to edit it down to a manageable 5 min video. Below is the hilarious end result:
Of course a totally ingenious idea such as this wouldn’t go unnoticed (the world hasn’t gone THAT daft yet, still pretty close to it otherwise though…) and so Merton or, as he came to be known on YouTube, Chatroulette Piano Guy has gotten millions of viewers in a short amount of time.
Amongst those viewer was one Ben Folds (yes, the same Ben Folds of the Ben Folds Five). He loved the idea so much that actually made an ‘Ode to Merton’ by connecting to chatroulette and then improvising songs to whomever popped up onscreen whilst playing live to a crowd of 2,000 people in Charlotte, NC (that’s North Carolina for all my Non-US brethren) In effect its become a pretty popular video in its own right, check it out:
Notice something? Regardless of the awesome piano skill and the witty, extempore lyrics, doesn’t Merton and Folds actually LOOK very similar? Turns out I wasn’t the only one who noticed that however Merton has so far denied that he is the 43 yr old nerdy piano player. Check out the comparison though:

Apart from the spooky similarities – there’s a tad more controversy like why YouTube actually took down Mertons videos since it somehow breached ‘Terms of Use’. Quick to respond, the Piano guy edited and now has at least 1 of his previous videos back online with a promise of more to come. For more giggles I strongly recommend you go and subscribe to: Mertons YouTube Channel
